 courses in Carrickfergus
Although Carrickfergus was strategically located within its indigenous setting, it had no topographic point to give a commanding position for the city. He may also have been told by the presence of a relatively rich outback and a harbour( at least incompletely natural) to the west of the gemstone on which the castle was erected. The castle passed into the guardianship of the crown when King John came to Carrickfergus in 1210 to take the earldom of Ulster into his own hands, and remained a crown possession until 1227, when Hugh de Lacy entered a alternate term as earl of Ulster, which continued until his death in 1243. Burgesses were recorded in 1221 and Carrickfergus was described as a village' in 1226. From this same man- made watercourse sludge manufactories were powered until the late nineteenth century. Not large enough to have created creeks or natural harbours, they may have acted more as hazards to littoral craft. This form of construction needed solid foundations, which Triassic marls could not give, and so the Anglo- Normans sought a gemstone outcrop as the point for their castle. A sludge shop was recorded in 1334 at an unknown position in or near the city, and if this was the same as that noted in as the' west shop', also this particular watercourse must have been developed by the early fourteenth century. The circumstance of a water force in the gemstone on which the castle daises was, of course, important to its builders and inhabitants, further so because the nearest swash was at Woodburn, one km to the west. This transition from high escarpments to low hills isn't without interruption, for the littoral plain just west of the ultimate is dominated by a flat- outgunned peak known as the Knockagh( 300 m)( Map 1), fringed on its seaward side by a basalt precipice one km in length and up to 30 m high.
